Research on the Relation between the Social Exclusion and the Depression/Anxiety of the Runaway Youths Who Stay(use) in Youth Shelters

Abstract

|
The purpose of the research is to investigate the relation between the social exclusion and the psychosocial maladjustment(depression and anxiety) of the runaway youths. In this research, the runaway youths who stayed in the youth shelters for short, middle and long terms were investigated in total 473 persons. From the research results, we found the followings: First, the degree of social exclusion, depression, and anxiety of the runaway youths was not serious. Second, social exclusion depending on the characteristics of social communities was more pronounced with the longer period of runaway and the shorter stay in the runaway youth shelters. And the depression and the anxiety of runaway youth were related with the sex, age, and staying period of runaway youth shelters: Female, older age, and shorter staying in the runaway youth shelters had more depression and anxiety. Third, in the various fields of social exclusion such as economy, society, and labor, the depression and anxiety of runaway youths were enhanced by the experiences of social exclusions. Therefore, for the well adjustment of the runaway youths to the society, the social problems would be tackled multi directional. For the prevention of the social exclusion problems, various policies could be developed. Moreover, several tactics and programs have to be developed and applied to youth shelters in order to overcome the depression and the anxiety for the good mental health of the runaway youths. Lastly, the period of stay in the youth shelters affecting social exclusion and mental health for the runaway youths could be studied personally, professionally, and integratedly.
